About Davidson
Davidson, located 30 miles north of Charlotte, is a town in Iredell and Mecklenburg counties. The population was 7,139 at the 2000 census. It is home to Davidson College.
Davidson is unique in that it is very different both geographically and culturally from the rest of Mecklenburg County. Lying along the eastern shore of Lake Norman, the town is centered around the southern college from which it takes its name.
The town was founded in 1837 with the establishment of the Presbyterian Davidson College, named for Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a local Revolutionary War hero in Mecklenburg County. The land for Davidson College came from Davidson's estate, a large portion of which was donated by his son.
This small, southern college town has engaged and active citizens who care deeply about their community and are dedicated to providing and maintaining a slendid quality of life. Maintaining the town’s unique qualities and superior services for every resident is a key core value to town government. Our town green is used for pick up football games, coffee sessions, play dates, festivals, croquet matches and outdoor concerts.
